Event Calendar
Flower Shows:
SCGC stages a Standard Flower Show every two years. Standard Flower Shows provide club members and the public an outlet to display their horticulture growing abilities and design creativity. Shows are geared to educate the public and communicate the goals and objectives of the National Garden Club, Inc. Shows are often held in public buildings throughout Springfield and have been held previously at White Oaks Mall, Edwards Place, the Illinois State Museum, the Dana-Thomas House, the Trutter Center at Lincoln Land Community College, and Calvary Church.
Bus Tours:
Bus tours are arranged for out-of-town trips to flower shows, gardens, etc. of interest to members. The chair makes transportation and reservation arrangements and collects money to cover the cost prior to the trip. Reservations are made on payment of fee and available on a first-come, first-served basis. If a bus does not fill, the chair may open it up to the public.
Workshops:
Workshops are held throughout the year for our members and guests. They are conducted by some of our guest speakers or by design experts from our own members. A nominal fee may be charged for materials or supplies. Popular workshops include wreath classes, flower show demonstrations, and fairy gardens.
Garden Walks:
Garden walks for the membership and guests take place during the summer months. These tours are held after general meetings, or a tour may take the place of a meeting. Gardens of members, as well as gardens from the community may be on the tours.
Meeting Happenings:
Horticulture:
A horticulture program is presented at monthly meetings. Garden planning and all phases of horticulture are covered. Members are encouraged to bring horticulture specimens to all monthly meetings to display.
Designs for the Home:
At each monthly meeting, three club members bring floral designs suitable for homes to discuss and display.
Lending Library:
The club has a collection of many great garden books available at the monthly meetings for members to check out and enjoy for a month until they are due at the next meeting.
Seed and Plant Exchange:
Members are asked to bring extra vegetable and flower seeds and plants to exchange with other members. The exchange is usually held at our October meeting.
Ways & Means:
Materials for gardening and flower design are available to members-only at below-retail prices before and after each meeting.
Annual Market: SCGC members may sell garden related and quality hand crafted items before and after the meeting at our annual market in September.
