Susan Helm’s Journey – Community Gardens and Partnerships

May 6 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

Speaker: Susan Helm

Susan Helm is an active community volunteer in Springfield, IL with a special emphasis on establishing pollinator gardens and habitats using native plants. She became interested in 2012 while directing a group of 25 University of Illinois extension volunteers at the Dana Thomas House to establish two pollinator gardens on that property. Since that time, she has worked with both the City of Springfield and the Springfield Park District to establish and support pollinator gardens at 10 parks, Maldaner’s Restaurant rooftop garden, downtown planters, downtown bump-outs and some businesses, most recently Grab-a-Java at Monroe and Chatham Road. She helped oversee the establishment of the Route 66 Monarch Flyway exhibit at the Illinois State Fairgrounds near Gate 2 which holds over 70 varieties of native plants to support pollinators with a special emphasis on Monarchs. She and fellow volunteer, Brenda Larison, have grown over 2,500 native milkweed for giveaway through the parks for the last 3 years and plan to repeat this in 2024.
